The short version
Social Security retirement benefits are based mainly on covered earnings and the age benefits begin. Claiming before full retirement age generally lowers the monthly amount; waiting can raise it up to age 70.
A larger monthly check is not automatically a larger lifetime total. Health, longevity, work, taxes, and household benefits matter.
Use an official statement for a personal estimate.
